Platinum V/s other metals

Not all white metals have the same qualities. Did you know that white gold is an alloy created using yellow gold? To keep its white colour white gold will usually need to be re-plated, whereas platinum is naturally white and will never fade or tarnish.

Compare the properties of platinum with other metals in the chart opposite.

  • Platinum is a naturally white metal which will not change colour over time
  • Platinum does not change shape so your jewellery will last a lifetime
  • Platinum's durability means precious stones are held securely for a lifetime - in fact platinum prongs are often used in rings made of less durable metals
  • Platinum is incredibly dense so it feels a lot heavier than other metals - a platinum ring would be around 40% heavier than the same ring made from gold
  • Platinum is usually 95% pure in jewellery (compared to 75% for 18k gold)
  • Platinum is naturally hypoallergenic, so it can be worn every day

You can identify a piece of platinum jewellery by its hallmark - a symbol or mark to indicate that it is high quality platinum. Have a look at the Design Features section to find out more about platinum jewellery hallmarks.
